Features Worth Your Attention Searching For A Golf Course In Lisbon

Not just The Algarve

When you think of golf in Portugal, you probably think of the southern region of the country (specifically the Algarve), which has become a golfing hotbed over the past half century. Lisbon on the other hand, is home to amazing architecture, monuments and some of the best seafood in Southern Europe. You might consider visiting the capital city for a holiday to see the sights or for business travel, but not golf. You'll be pleased to learn that the capital is making a big effort to take some of the golf tourism business away from the Algarve region.

Golf hotspots

The main areas near Lisbon for golf are Estoril, which is near to the capital, and Obidos, located nearer the coast. If you are set on seeing the tourist sites and basing yourself in the capital city, you can still play golf provided that you choose a course in Estoril and are willing to travel a bit further everyday to get to the first tee.

Now that you know the area to base yourself, here are a couple of suggestions for accommodation:

  • Quinta da Marinha or Penha Longa (located in the towns of Estoril & Cascais)

  • Belas and Quinta Do Peru

Lisbon area golf courses

Once you've settled on your choice of accommodation, you'll want to decide which courses you are going to obsess over. Below are two of the best in the Lisboa area:

  • Quinta da Marinha and Troia designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr

  • The Penha Longa (Atlantico) designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr The Penha Longa course has hosted the Portuguese Open in the past so do not try to play from the white tees unless you boast a scratch handicap. Quinta de Marinha, on the other hand, shows that father Trent Jones can design just as well as his son.

Riba Golfe and Campo Real are both parkland courses with wide fairways and plenty of water hazards. If you would like to play a course that has more of a links feel, Oitavos Dunes and Praia del Rey will make you feel that you are on the British coastline playing a famous British Open venue. You’ll need to keep the ball down and under control as the strong gusts from the Atlantic Ocean try to blow you and your partners off the course.
